National Allotments Week 2008, 11 - 17 August
National Allotments Week is now promoted by the National Allotment Gardens Trust in partnership with the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners. It is a week to:
- Promote the awareness and availability of allotments both locally and nationally
- To show both the public and local authorities the strength of support for and interest in the heritage of allotment culture.
- Hightlight the social benefits of allotment gardening, which
include benefits to health, education and community well-being, to all
- inlcuding councils who are at present not providing this invaluable
community resource.
The National Allotment Gardens Trust wishes to encourage as many gardeners to support the initiative as possible. The essential ingredient for the week's success is for allotment sites to open to the public via planned open days and events. There are lots of different ways to get your site involved. For example, you could invite and arrange for schools or other community groups to visit your allotment site, or exhibit your area's allotment produce. Ask your local council for help and support, and promote your events as widely as you can. The National Allotment Gardens Trust, who would love to hear about your plans for the week.
