Haddocks Wood Allotment Association, Runcorn, Cheshire
A few years ago, our allotments were being vandalised. Sheds were burned, fences and produce were being taken and discarded. We were really fed up and decided something had to be done.
We formed a committee and applied for grants and help from the local council site officer. With the money we were able to install security lighting, cameras to monitor the plots and the grounds outside and secure fencing around the site. We also installed 13 new plots, a storeroom, new roads and disabled toilets. We developed a plot for use by the Occupational therapy unit at the local hospital and the local school. We now have about 30 disabled clients on site. In total we now have 68 plots and a waiting list.
In June 2005 we held an open day with activities such as pond dipping, willow weaving and planting sunflower seeds for children to take home. A display of falcons and owls took place. Healthy Living had a stall with fresh fruit and products for people to sample. We had about 200 visitors on the day. A raffle was held with prizes donated by local stores and plot holders. Refreshments and cakes were provided, and donations were also accepted. All monies raised were donated to local hospice.
