Horsham Shelley Allotment Society, West Sussex
A few years ago the management committee of Horsham Shelley Allotments Society, a statutory site since 1947, commenced a site improvement plan beginning by clearing the main entrance. The area was levelled with the help of pupils from The Millais School, Horsham and a new hedgerow and bulbs were planted. At the same time a further five water tanks were purchased and installed.
In 2005 an existing roofless brick structure was transformed into a new toilet block, including separate ladies and gents facilities with washbasins. We were able to obtain recycled doors and windows and a small group of willing members gave their time freely. Horsham District Council paid £2,500 to cover the cost of connection to the existing sewer.
Last year we decided to replace our almost derelict HQ building, again using volunteer labour. Approximately 90% of the materials were recycled or obtained free of charge. We paid just under £800 for roofing, nails, electrical wiring and a generator. We now have a very sturdy, fully operational 24’ x 16’ timber building.
Meanwhile, we have been clearing overgrown plots to attract and keep new members. Having been less than 75% occupied, we are now fully let with 131 members cultivating 161 plots. The final stage of our improvement plan is to upgrade the main site tracks and provide all year round car-parking facilities.
