Mollands Lane Allotment Society, Upminster, Essex

Butterfly on a buddhliaBack in 2002 our allotment site was overgrown and untidy. But following Thurrock Council?s decision in 2003 to allow allotment holders to manage their sites themselves, it has been transformed. Only 7 of our 30 plots were occupied. Now all these plots are taken and there's a waiting list.

Bees from our hives buzz around helping to pollinate plants and produce honey, which can be bought on-site, water funnels built by allotment holders collect rainwater in order to help water resources. The site also boasts a wildlife/bog garden. We applied for £180 worth of materials through the B&Q Better Neighbours Scheme. The garden is designed to encourage hedgehogs, insects, birds and amphibians. There are nesting boxes, insect boxes, an information board and trellises for climbing plants.

We have raised money through raffles and quiz nights to buy a Portakabin, which provides a meeting place and shelter in bad weather. We have also successfully applied for an Awards for All grant and received £1,180. We used the money to buy a tiller and will be getting more equipment and communal tools. We hope to secure another grant through our local council for a toilet, so we will be better equipped to invite children's groups to enjoy the site.

We believe that self-management of our allotments has breathed life back into the site, making a huge difference to our environment.
