National Family Week
The UK’s first National Family Week takes place in 2009, with the aim of getting families to spend more time together for the benefit of themselves and their communities. Organisers of the week, which takes place in May, say good family relationships are vital to help everyone achieve and thrive, and that strong, happy families make strong, healthy communities. Fun events and activities for families will be happening during May half-term in parks and community gardens, at visitor attractions, leisure centres, schools, in community centres and shopping centres.
There’s also a national event taking place to attempt to break the record for the World’s Biggest Picnic, which will happen at numerous locations around the country on the same day. Families, clubs, schools and organisations will be able to register their picnic as part of the record-breaking attempt and enjoy the early summer sun with their siblings, parents, children and other local families.
There will be many opportunities for people to get involved, for example by entering the competition to think up a ‘Big Family Idea’ to improve family life in the future, by taking part in ‘Sports Saturday’, or by submitting an entry into the ‘Family of the Year’ award. There will also be lots of prizes, discounts and free stuff given away.
National Family Week is backed by the Prime Minister, by a host of important organisations and charities including Save the Children and the Women’s Institute and by celebrities such as Rebecca Adlington, Sally Gunnell, Anthony Worral Thompson and Tanya Byron. There will be extensive media coverage during the week on TV, radio, in the national and local press and online.
