Saffron Lane Neighbourhood Council in Leicester was set up in 1975 and provides access for local people to a wide range of support services. One of these is the Saffron Acres Project, a community food growing and environmental project started in 2006. Saffron Acres provides opportunities for local people to grow food, gain an understanding of healthy lifestyles and how to live more sustainably. We have a range of volunteers including young people and adults with physical and learning disabilities, individuals with mobility difficulties, sensory impairments, and poor mental health. We also work with those not in employment, education or training, at risk of exclusion or unemployed. We aim to reduce social isolation, improve physical and mental health, improve skills and wellbeing, and community cohesion through access to gardening and environmental activities.
