Enjoy five days of lively learning and site visits to beautiful places alongside other community growing leaders.

Gain an internationally recognised qualification and the opportunity to become a Gardeniser Trainer yourself.

Demonstrate to funders and stakeholders that your organisation - whether large or small - delivers at a high professional standard and provides multiple benefits to your community.

The course covers: 

Module 1: Understanding the community garden/farm

  • Understanding the main concepts and main characteristics of community gardens and farms
  • History of the community garden
  • Consulting the community
  • The importance of partnerships
  • Advocacy, good communication and managing conflict.
  • Finding the right site for your project
  • Design of the site

Module 2: Working effectively with staff and volunteers

  • Looking after staff, volunteers, and visitors
  • Techniques to support people who are stressed and to increase wellbeing.
  • Contributions and challenges of working with volunteers
  • Recruiting, inducting, and retaining volunteers

Module 3: Sustainability

  • Understanding costs and budgeting
  • Creating an action plan
  • Ways to bring in income
  • Evaluation as a process
  • Doing a health check of the project

Practical work and homework includes:

  • Visits to other gardens and farms
  • Setting up meetings and events
  • Organising activities
  • Recruiting staff and volunteers
  • Running planning sessions
  • Creating rules and policies
  • Working with a budget
  • Working to a plan and bringing in income
  • Running evaluation sessions
  • Doing a health check

The course costs £300 including all London travel and refreshments, professional training by qualified and experienced trainers, and support to complete the course and to thrive in your work.

We are able to offer a limited number of funded places for people that live in Newham or work or volunteer in community growing spaces in Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney or Waltham Forest.
