Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC) and Forest Roof Garden
Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC) is a Development Education Centre close to the heart of Reading's town centre. We work with schools and community groups to raise the profile of global issues and promote action for sustainability, human rights and social justice.
The centre is also home to a forest roof garden based on permaculture and forest garden principles and designed to raise awareness of green issues including sustainable development and economic and historical importance of plants. Producing fruit, veg and medicinal plants the garden also incorporates: water harvesting, solar panels and wind turbine for drip irrigation system. The hard landscaping uses recycled, renewable materials. The project is open to volunteer involvement, especially in harvesting and utilising some of the wide variety of plant materials produced.
National Garden Society Open Days and second weekend of month May - Sept. 2.00 - 4.00 pm details are published on the website or are available via contact details. (The garden can only be accessed by climbing an external stairway). Groups by appt.NGS day
RISC is very close to the main Reading Centre, 10 minutes walk from the station. London Street intersects the main shopping street, Broad Street by the new Oracle shopping Centre at Dukes bridge. It is on the north side of the Kennet canal and the inner distribution road, both of which bisect the town centre.
