Bredon Hill Academy Garden and Eco Action Team
In 2009 we designed and made a garden with a circular lawn, seating, flowers and vegetables in a disused area of the school. Pupils volunteered to help at lunchtimes and a new after school gardening club creating a haven of tranquility, an area to relax at lunchtimes, for outside lessons, growing produce for our school kitchen, cookery room, local produce show and to share fresh and warm in the summer sunshine. With soft fruit, fruit trees, exotic plantings, ferns, flowers, vegetables in raised beds and a pet enclosure. Pupils maintain and improve the grounds all year, whatever the weather. In heavy rain and dark of winter sorting seed, making plans, labels, and signs. We share our harvest with the school, celebrate with harvest displays, apple days and pumpkin carving competitions. With prizes from our local produce show, RHS and Woodland Trust certificates, and participation in the village open garden event, we gained the admiration of our local community. We contribute to our Healthy eating status and use heritage varieties. We give away cuttings when our herbs need trimming. Many pupils earn gardener and head gardener badges sharing skills and knowledge with other pupils, schools and gardeners. We have visitors and volunteers including parents, governors gardeners, farmers and representatives from green industry and nature charities. raising the profile of our work and promotes green careers and study. We have developed growing into a whole school ethos.
