The Seeds is a new horticulture club for people living with HIV over 50 years of age at Calthorpe Community Gardens.
The project was a collaboration in between Positively UK, The Food Chain, YMCA Positive Health Program and Calthorpe Community Gardens (Calthorpe Project). We started at the end of March 2019. Finish April 2021.
From April 2021 was run by Positively UK at Calthorpe community Gardens premises.
The main aim of the project is to improve the wellbeing of people over 50's living with HIV. We hope to help reducing the isolation that people experience forming a horticulture club that meets once a week at Calthorpe gardens.
In the summer months we do gardening sessions with a garden therapist and open air gym classes with a facilitator from the YMCA.
In winter we will deliver wellbeing talks and nutrition classes with our partner, The Food Chain. Other activities include visits to gardens and natural areas in London.
We are taking part of London festivals like Chelsea Fringe, London National Park City, "Festivity of Activities" (IAPAC international conference), London Harvest with an HIV awareness campaign based on a floral display created by Seeds participants.
The floral display is at Calthorpe Community Gardens and share the important U=U message (it stands for Undetectable = Untransmittable – meaning that those on effective HIV treatment can’t pass it on).
Calthorpe is a community garden open to all the community. We hold the sessions there in the hope to reduce the self stigma that some people living with HIV are experiencing and help them to join any local community projects.
Our project is just a Seed for the people to start gardening, exercising in the open air or join a local community project.
The project is funded until 31st March 2020 with an extension until April 2021.
Positively UK funded the project until November 2021.
The volunteers are hoping to continuing gardening at Calthorpe.
