Gleadless Valley is one of the poorest and most deprived areas of Sheffield. Gleadless Valley Methodist Church is the prominent faith organisation in the area and a leading deliver of community services. The church hosts the weekly Gleadless Valley Foodbank (established in and sustained since 2012), youth clubs and older peoples activities and works with partners on many other community projects and services.

In May 2015, with the support of church and other local volunteers and Heeley City Farm and with funding from the Big Lottery, a food-growing garden was created on unused land surrounding the church.

Heeley City Farm employ a Local Food Grower to run weekly sessions in the garden, supporting local volunteers and other participants to cultivate the garden. The gardening sessions take place at the same time as the Gleadless Valley Foodbank is open in the church building. The garden and has been regularly featured in the local press and other media and in 2018 won a Yorkshire in Bloom award. It won and has retained to date the Green Flag Community Award from 2020.

In April 2019 local people set up the Friends of Gleadless Valley Methodist Church Community Garden (FGVMCCG) to support the Gleadless Valley Methodist Church Community Garden project.
