NHS Forest and Healthy by Nature
The NHS Forest, coordinated by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, is a national programme supporting healthcare sites to improve their green spaces for the benefit of patients, staff, communities and wildlife. The network now includes over 500 healthcare sites across the UK, with more than 165,000 trees planted on or near NHS sites since 2009. Alongside tree planting, the programme supports healthcare organisations to improve biodiversity, create and manage green spaces, and make greater use of nature to support health and wellbeing.
Healthy by Nature builds on this work by embedding Nature Recovery Rangers within 10 NHS Trusts. The Rangers are based across a diverse range of healthcare settings and cover Trusts in Nottinghamshire, Dorset, East and North Hertfordshire, Newcastle, London, Manchester, Stockport, Tameside, Bradford and Liverpool. The opportunities and focus of each Ranger’s work vary depending on the healthcare setting, the green spaces available and the needs and priorities of patients, staff and local communities. This means activities are developed locally and can range from improving habitats and biodiversity to food growing, volunteering, nature-based activities and supporting greater use of green space for health and wellbeing.
Whilst the charity is based in Oxford, our services and activities that communities can get involved with are across all of these locations above, with opportunities varying according to each healthcare setting and local programme. To find out more about what is available near you and to connect with your local Nature Recovery Ranger, please contact [email protected].
