Community Garden Activities & Outreach Lead (freelance), London
Community Garden Activities & Outreach Lead (freelance) Location: London Borough of Barking & Dagenham. Hours: c. 2 days a week for 12 month Salary: £18,000 fee for the year
The National Trust is looking for a freelance individual or organisation to join us at a really exciting time in the next chapter of Stoneford Community Garden in Dagenham, that is opening in August 2022. This unique opportunity is to run a programme of engaging and interesting activities to help the garden become a special place in the community, and ensure that it’s somewhere that local residents want to visit on their doorstep.
We’re looking for a programme of high-quality outdoor activities for a range of audiences. These should be based on some of the following themes: nature and wildlife, gardening; food growing, orchard care, outdoor crafts, forest school / nursery; drama and storytelling; (this isn’t an exhaustive list, we’d love to hear your ideas!)
We envisage this being around 3-5 hours a week of visitor-facing activities, but we would expect the freelancer to design a programme to best suit the season and visitor groups. This could be as a weekly after-school club for example, or perhaps as a full Saturday of activity once a month together with a few sessions in half-term. This will depend on the season and targeted age-group of visitors, and we expect group sizes will be between 10 – 30. Our lone-working policy means that all sessions must have two leaders.
We also want to explore opportunities for the garden’s future operational model. The National Trust owns the garden itself and is committed to it opening regularly for the benefit of the local community. We also think there are lots of ways that the garden could be run, and we don’t need to be the main operator for the longer-term. There may be other groups and organisations who could be better placed to run it either by themselves or in partnership with us, and we’re keen to think through these options. The freelance role will build relationships and connections with local groups and similar organisations to capture these emerging options for a future partnership model. The freelance role is for a year, working roughly 2 days a week.
