Forest School Volunteer Location: Surrey Docks Farm, London SE16 Contract: Volunteer Hours: Part-time. Volunteers would need to commit to attending every Friday morning for the six week pilot session from 5th November to 10th December from 9:30am-1pm.
Surrey Docks Farm is a community farm in the heart of London. We provide our visitors with unique opportunities to learn about farming, food production, wildlife and horticulture by becoming actively involved. We run a range of informal education activities for children and young people at the Farm as well as workshops and tours for local primary schools.
We're now establishing a new Forest School provision in the Farm's Wildlife Garden, led by one of our trained Forest School Leaders. Initially we're delivering a six-week pilot project on Friday mornings in November-December 2021 engaging six home-educated children aged 8-12 years. We're also currently in discussion with several local primary schools who are interested in booking Forest School courses here in 2022.
We're now aiming to recruit a volunteer to assist with the delivery of this pilot project; and potentially to stay on in the new year. We're looking for someone who enjoys working with young people aged 8-12 years and is comfortable being outdoors in all weather conditions! The role will involve supporting the Forest School Leader deliver hands-on nature activities, using bushcraft tools, lighting fires and promoting the Forest School ethos of a child-centred and play approach.
Existing experience with nature, wildlife and bushcraft activities is useful, but FAR more important is a person who is enthusiastic about youth work, is patient, supportive and able to follow instructions to enable the young people to get the most out of these sessions.
In return we will give you valuable experience working with young people. This is an ideal role for those wanting to work in environmental education, youth work and/or to go into teaching. Volunteers would need to commit to attending every Friday morning for the six week pilot session from 5th November to 10th December, from 9:30am-1pm.
