SiMY works alongside 8-18 year olds and their families in Townhead and the surrounding areas, helping them to overcome barriers to achieving their aspirations for themselves and their communities. Our participant group reflects the wide diversity of the local community. Almost 100% of participants come from economically marginalised communities with low economic, social and cultural capital. 70% are from the global majority and approximately 20% are seeking, or have sought, asylum, 10% identify as LGBTQI+ and 10% are neurodivergent.

Townhead is an area of multiple deprivation (SIMD 5% most deprived in Scotland) and many YP and their families face complex, interconnected challenges, including: economic deprivation, overcrowded poor quality housing, acute lack of access to green space and community facilities, lack of personal/collective agency, and poor mental/physical health. We are currently working with approximately 150 young people (YP) at our community green space and within local schools.

Our work aims to alleviate the negative mental, physical, and social health impacts of long term poverty. Wherever possible, our activities take place outdoors, maximising exposure to the many proven benefits of spending time in nature. Our programme focuses on four interconnected development areas: mental and physical wellbeing, self-confidence and self-expression, social skills and reduced social isolation, and agency over their lives and communities.
