Uncertain Microcosm: City Farms as Authors of Civic Ecologies
A beautiful presentation led by Jane McAllister, course leader for Art, Architecture and Design at London Met University.
This talk will present research gathered on four city farms. It aims to show how the farms provide an invaluable alternative to state provision and contribute fundamentally to the well-being of our cities.
The presentation will look at four aspects of production that address the characteristics of the social economy of city farms. The first, Oxford City Farm, explores the concept of ‘setting’ through themes of gift economy. The second, Vauxhall City Farm, explores memory and belonging through storytelling to establish the role of ‘people’ in place-making. The third, Mudchute City Farm, explores diversity and its role in ‘community’ making. The last, Kentish Town City Farm, explores governance and its role in developing resilience.
All four ‘characteristics’ are required to form a stable microcosm for the city farm and resilience and well-being are reciprocal partners.
