Community Garden Essentials: An Introduction to Site Design
Where: The Hidden Gardens, Glasgow, G41 2PE
When: Wednesday 28th September, 10.00 to 4.00 pm
This introduction to the basic concepts of garden design will give participants an idea of what the design process looks like, a checklist of key things to consider and the inspiration and confidence to go away and get started on designing or improving their site with community involvement.
Key areas covered will include:
- An introduction to design and some inspiration from the community growing movement
- Identifying your communities needs and incorporating them into your design
- Site survey and mapping techniques
- Practical and legal isses to consider
- Identifying and siting key features
- Practice designing a garden (not your own!)
- The opportunity to give Hidden Garden feedback on your visitor experience of the garden and possible ideas they could take forward.
The day will be based at The Hidden Gardens in Glasgow, we will be joined by volunteers that work in the garden and Jean Gavin (Gardener and Designer) who will share their experience, thoughts and perspectives on developing and managing their garden.
The afternoon session will also involve a short walk to Glasgow's oldest allotment site, New Victoria Gardens for more inspiration and a practical session.
This day is for people and groups who are at the very embryonic stage of setting up a community garden or a community growing space.
This training would be useful for you if you are a member of a group in the planning stages of your garden, and want to include all the members of your group in designing a garden which will meet their needs.
Refreshments and a soup and bread lunch will be provided on the day.
Please wear sturdy shoes. We will be outdoors so dress accordingly!
