Building and maintaining soil fertility - Cynyddu a chynnal ffrwythlondeb pridd

Registration is closed for this event

Good soil fertility is the cornerstone of a productive, sustainable and viable horticultural business. This training session is an opportunity to visit one of the most innovative, exciting and experienced growers in the UK. Iain Tolhurst has been an organic grower for a little over 40 years, and has spent many of those years experimenting with different approaches to building and maintaining soil fertility, using a wide variety of green manures and honing his composting system.

This event is primarily for community based growing projects with a strong commercial element and for Community Supported Agriculture projects in particular. A fantastic opportunity to learn from one of the best in the business!

About the Tolhurst Organic Partnership

Tolly, along with his business partner Lin, has held the organic symbol for over 30 years. This makes the Tolhurst Organic Partnership one of the longest running organic vegetable farms in England, and it was the first to attain the “Stockfree Organic” symbol in 2004

They supply about 200 boxes a week of seasonal organic vegetables, 85% of which (in terms of value) is produced on the farm. Up to 25 field crops are grown on a 7-year rotation. A 1 ha walled garden produces up to 50 intensively grown, high value crops on a 9-year rotation and provides up to 120,000 plants for transplanting out into the field. Within the walled garden 1500 m2 of polytunnel space produce a wide selection of salads.

The system is underpinned by diverse green manures, both short and long term, as crops in themselves and as ‘relays’, a system pioneered at Tolhurst Organic which allows the growing of green manures and crops together. The composting system uses locally produced tree waste material to produce around 250 m3 of quality compost which not only supports the crops, but forms the basis of the plant growing media.

Mae’r digwyddiad hwn yn bennaf ar gyfer prosiectau tyfu cymunedol gydag elfen fasnachol gref, a phrosiectau Amaethyddiaeth a Gefnogir gan y Gymuned, yn benodol. Bydd yn gyfle gwych i ddysgu oddi wrth un o’r gorau yn y busnes!

Ynglŷn â Tolhurst Organic Partnership

Mae Tolly, ynghyd â’i bartner busnes, Lin, wedi meddu ar y symbol organig ers dros 30 mlynedd. Tolhurst Organic Partnership yw un o’r ffermydd llysiau organig sydd wedi bod yn rhedeg hwyaf yn Lloegr, a’r cyntaf i ennill y symbol “Stockfree Organic” yn 2004.

Maen nhw’n cyflenwi oddeutu 200 o flychau’r wythnos o lysiau organig tymhorol, a chaiff 85% o’r cynnyrch (o ran gwerth) ei gynhyrchu ar y fferm. Caiff hyd at 25 o gnydau maes eu tyfu ar gylchdro o 7 mlynedd. Mae gardd furiog 1 hectar yn cynhyrchu hyd at 50 o gnydau gwerth uchel a dyfir yn ddwys, ar gylchdro o 9 naw mlynedd, ac mae’n darparu hyd at 120,000 o blanhigion i’w trawsblannu i’r caeau. Yn yr ardd furiog, mae 1500 m2 o le mewn twnelau polythen yn cynhyrchu detholiad eang o saladau.

Caiff y system ei thanategu gan wrtaith gwyrdd amrywiol, yn y tymor byr a’r hirdymor, fel cnydau eu hunain ac fel ‘system gyfnewidiol’, sef system a arloeswyd yn Tolhurst Organic, sy’n caniatáu tyfu gwrtaith gwyrdd a chnydau gyda’i gilydd. Mae’r system gompostio yn defnyddio deunydd gwastraff coed a gynhyrchir yn lleol i gynhyrchu oddeutu 250 m3 o gompost o ansawdd, sydd nid yn unig yn cynnal y cnydau, ond sy’n ffurfio sylfaen y cyfrwng tyfu planhigion.

Mae lleoedd yn gyfyngedig, felly trefnwch le yn gynnar i osgoi cael eich siomi. Darllenwch ein polisi canslo
