Rachel Solnick is a PhD candidate at the University of Aberystwyth. Her work considers the social, cultural and political production of Detroit’s urban farms. Detroit has become famous for its urban farms, with over 2000 gardens documented in the city, yet the roots of the movement lie in very different soils from those we are familiar with here in the UK. Drawing from long histories of African American growing, gardening and culture, Detroit’s farms are a beautiful example of a radically different way of being and connecting to land.
