Huge thanks to funders The Worshipful Company of Farmers, City Bridge Foundation and CACI for making this year’s harvest festival possible.
Social Farms & Gardens members travelled from across London to celebrate the harvest season, with hundreds of young farmers, community gardeners, staff, volunteers and members gathering at Mudchute Farm on Saturday 20 September.
It was particularly wonderful to see so many fantastic animals on site after they were not allowed to travel last year due to blue tongue, and the young farmers were keen to show off their fluffy friends!
The horticultural show was very competitive, with some incredible produce on display, including huge mooli, watermelons, and bouquets of herbs and flowers.
The craft tent included adorable mini succulent gardens in recycled oyster shells, felting and jewellery making, for anyone to get involved.
The tug of war competition left everyone energised for the closing ceremony where Spitalfields City Farm’s community gardening team were awarded top prize in the horticultural show. The beautiful hand forged trophy was created by Urban Crafts Foundation with help from crafty young people throughout the day. And the hosts at Mudchute Farm accepted the coveted animal show shield!
We also managed to pop away for a few minutes for a quick tour by some of the enthusiastic volunteers at the Martyn Daniels Community Garden onsite. This is a great little container garden in the centre of the farm with strawberry plants tumbling out of ladder planters, and pallet raised beds with neatly sown salads and winter veg.
Thanks to London City Farms & Community Gardens Association for organising a fantastic event once again!
