Community Growing Spaces taking Climate Action

Community Food Event Conwy 2024

Two years ago, we kicked off Camau Gwyrdd (Green Steps) funded by The National Lottery Community Fund Sustainable Steps Programme.

This project has been a fantastic opportunity for the Social Farms & Gardens Cymru team to visit and work alongside some of our members who are doing incredible work to build the resilience of their local communities in the face of climate change.

We believe that community growing spaces can be at the forefront of our collective response to the climate crisis. Through these spaces, where nature and biodiversity can thrive, communities build connections between citizens and with our natural world to develop resilience that helps us face challenges together.

The climate crisis is not affecting us all equally and so this project has been about the role that community growing spaces also play in social justice. We loved the work of Incredible Edible Conwy (IE Conwy) who partnered with Foodshare North Wales and Conwy Sustainable Food Places team to encourage local residents to enjoy the edible beds around the town and learn to grow their own at home.  By undertaking this type of activity as a group, we have people to share our story with, and to ask questions when on this new journey.

As we step into this final year of the project, Social Farms & Gardens are looking for community growing spaces who, like IE Conwy, want to see more people feeling confident and able to take climate action together; building community and nature in our cities, towns and villages to enjoy now, and boosting our collective resilience to face current and future challenges.
If increasing the diversity of people involved in your community growing space is something your organisation is keen to do, please contact [email protected] to discuss your idea.
