Earthworks St Albans is a registered charity that offers social and therapeutic horticulture and other nature-based activities and opportunities for individuals who have a learning disability (known as Earthworkers) and Gardeners who may have additional support needs. Earthworkers, Gardeners, volunteers and staff learn and work together to develop and maintain 3.5 acres of eco-gardens, with a focus on sustainability, organic horticulture and traditional countryside skills.
Our site has been described as an 'oasis', boasting themed ornamental gardens, large allotment gardens, individual plots, heritage orchard, woodland, woodyard, pond habitats, forest garden and wildflower meadow, all centred around our sustainably sourced oak-framed eco-building.
Earthworks engages the wider public through our monthly stall at the St Albans farmers market, as well as with open days and workshops throughout the year. We offer workshops for groups of school children and young people with learning disabilities and a summer scheme for young adults.
