The garden was established by Sustaining Dunbar, a Community Development Trust, in 2012. It is located behind the Belhaven Hospital on NHS ground and we have a rolling yearly lease and permission to garden. It's a 2.5 acre site with a substantial orchard with 120 heritage apple trees, 11 plum and 10 pear trees, around a field with plots for growing vegetables, a polytunnel, 18 raised beds, a sensory garden and soft fruit patches. We organise community events around the apple harvest and veg harvest, offer open sessions for social prescribing clients, and organise regular volunteer sessions each week to help with garden maintenance. Currently, we have the After School Club, West Barns Primary school and a group of Rural Skills students using the garden on a regular basis as a place to learn about plants and nature and to grow food. We are planning to extend access to adults with learning difficulties soon as well.
