Westray Development Trust is a community development trust based on the island of Westray, Orkney, Scotland. The Trust is a registered charity with goal to develop the social, cultural and economic sustainability of our island. One of our projects is the Westray Community Garden, also known as Food Miles to Food Smiles. Since Westray as at the end of a very long food supply chain, by the time 'fresh' produce reaches us, it is no longer very fresh. The aim of the project is to support the Westray Community to grow their own as well as supply local shops with what we can from our polytunnels and outdoor vegetable beds. As a result, we aim to reduce the food miles of produce consumed in Westray and provide fresh nutritious food in the process. The Garden is open to the community to volunteer and we host a range of events throughout the year with the local community and community groups.
