Our orchard is nature-led and partially wild, with mown paths through fruit trees and hedgerow-like fruit bushes. It holds a vast collection of apple tree varieties, damson trees and edible berries, all chosen for our West Coast of Scotland location. Since it was planted a rich biodiversity has been established over the 16 years, in a place that was once just cut grass. Because of this buzzing ecological activity the orchard is a much enjoyed sanctuary of nature, right by the centre of Glasgow. The orchard is also seen as a public resource with masses of produce, free for anyone to pick and take home throughout the year. Supported by the local community council and Glasgow City Council the orchard is looked after by group of local residents. Alongside basic care the group also does many educational activities and participates regularly in local fairs with jam sales, apple pressing and nature trails around the orchard. They pay special attention to encouraging the nearby Primary Schools to get involved with an ‘adopt-a tree’ programme and harvesting events.
