Cultura Trust is a charity established in 1965 which has always had learning at its heart. That began with nurturing the relationship between people and places they value, expanded in the 1980s with saving local landmarks, and went on to support education and training in the traditions upon which historic buildings, townscapes and landscapes depend. That agenda now includes the environment, climate, sustainability and wellbeing, as people see that all these contribute to our way of life. Over twenty years Cultura has broadened and refocussed on need: recent projects have prioritised our response to the UN Sustainable Development Goals which embrace all aspects of social inclusion and welfare of people’s sense of belonging. Our next chapters will be written at Camp Farm, Maryport, Cumbria and at Gayle Mill, Hawes, North Yorkshire. Camp Farm is over 140 acres of coastal landscape important as being part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site, and of the Solway Coast AONB. Until now it has been commercially farmed, but Cultura’s vision is of a learning resource for all interests and abilities, serving West Cumbria and beyond. The three main assets are the land, the archaeology and the buildings, all of which will provide the means of learning through activities to match what’s in the best interests of participants. On a smaller but nevertheless equally important site, we are using one of upper Wensleydale’s prized assets, an historic watermill and meadow, to provide meaningful support to the community and visitors needful of respite or encouragement. We are at the beginning of these journeys, so pick up a trowel and a sandwich and come and join us.
