Community Kitchen Garden

Carronvale House would like to re-build its kitchen garden within the grounds of the Centre.
Our aims with this are
Reduce our Carbon Footprint- reducing plastic packaging, growing some of the produce the centre requires and this is one of many measures we are undertaking to reduce our footprint.
Employment and Volunteer involvement. We hope this will allow local volunteers the chance to showcase their skills along with the social interaction. We also hope to employ more.
Education, we would like the garden to be a living learning platform for our local community, and other young visitors to the Centre. Not only what is grown but develop the learning to our youth in the concept of the food journey from garden to plate, and the benefits of personal health and environmental health.
We would like to use an area of land at the rear of the property to re-establish a “Kitchen Garden”. As an estate House this was here within the walled garden, but this area is now used for Sports, but thankfully we have a reasonable area of land to use.
The Key aims
Reduce our Carbon footprint. Along with several other projects focusing on this issue, the garden will help reduce the footprint created with the food supply chain, and the food wastage disposal.
Reduce Plastic usage and disposal. The vegetables used in the kitchen are packaged in many ways, mostly plastic, this will help reduce this waste.
Employment. We would hope to employ one new role with this project, along with the cost saving to the Centre’s kitchen, help secure existing employees.
Volunteer Work. We will be very keen to encourage volunteers to get involved in the garden. This might suit our older age community members who are keen to get out of the House and get involved with a project. Helping their mental health with the social interaction and the purpose it will give them.
Education. We are lucky enough to have a primary school across the road, who we hope will look at this as a “living learning platform” and we can work together to help educate our future. We also benefit from many “youth groups “staying with us, so again we would look to highlight and educate them. We would also then as the project grows, look to add to the education, possible kitchen learning. Something along the lines of from the garden to the plate, its journey, and what can be cooked, in so many ways. We also would hope this will help educate all our guests in the overall issue of what can be done to help our climate.
For 75 years, Carronvale House has been the National Training Centre for the Boys’ Brigade in Scotland. Every year, thousands of children, young people and adults enjoy its facilities. However, Carronvale offers much more than a venue for a training course or a sports match. Historic Scotland designates this Grade A listed mansion as a building of special architectural and historic interest. Furthermore, it is an asset to the local community.
