Sissinghurst VA Primary School
For the past several years we have had an active Forest School on our school site. All children spend one afternoon a week for a six week term in our our Forest School. At the beginning of this academic year we partnered with a local farmer to start an in school Farm School. We started with laying hens and then added 3 pigs which we raised and sent to market. We are in the midst of developing our Kitchen Garden and now have 2 more pigs to raise. Each class attends a Farm school lesson once a week and in the final week the children visit the working farm. Here the farmer gives a tour and the children get to experience and hopefully understand where our food comes from. We focus a lot on the Five freedoms of Animal Welfare, on ethical farming on stewardship and on sustainability. We hope to slowly build on our project to include bees and other animals. The children are actively involved in our project and we are all really excited about it.
