Gardd Gymunedol Yr Heliwr Community Garden

The Garden was established in September 2021 by volunteers drawn from the community of Nefyn and committee members of Yr Heliwr community pub.

The garden operates within the umbrella of Yr Heliwr’s community benefit society, and its original funding was secured by the pub; however, garden committee members have taken the project forward as a free standing Unincorporated Association.

We are proud of our Nefyn location and believe passionately in promoting its unique culture and protecting the Welsh language.

By harnessing our individual skills, we endeavour to educate and equip our members with the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance both our understanding of the natural environment and our ability to engage with it.

The Garden is not just a physical space in which to tend plants, grow food and improve habitats, but an area that allows and encourages an interchange of knowledge and ideas.

It is a green space for our members and the wider community to use for the promotion of wellbeing, mindfulness and enjoyment through shared endeavour which we seek to harness for the good of our members and the wider community.

Aims and powers

Aims

In order to further the causes of sustainability and biodiversity in Nefyn, the aims of the Garden shall be:

to provide a physical space to grow a wide range of plants, fruit and vegetables;

to encourage biodiversity through conservation;

to educate about food production, the natural environment, local culture and customs in a dynamic learning environment;

to act as a ‘kitchen garden’ for Yr Heliwr community pub, providing fresh seasonal produce for their food menu;

to sell our produce at an affordable market rate and utilise all resulting profits to financially support the project and pay our £300 annual lease and running costs;

to facilitate the exchange and development of ideas and skills between members;

to promote the sustainable values of the Garden within other associate member organisations;

to enhance well-being through the shared endeavour and enjoyment of gardening as well as providing a welcoming green space for the benefit of others;

to preserve, protect and promote the welsh language and local heritage through our activities;

to encourage maximum member and community engagement, and to promote social opportunities for members of all interests.
