We are in partnership with our local primary school and we have been conducting outdoor learning for five years now and by far the most popular lesson is Beekeeping. Now our fame has spread and many other schools in the area have wanted to come along for the Beekeeping lesson. What we would like to do is set up a separate hive outside the apiary just for education purposes. Visual aids for education for small children 5 to 8 year olds is key to the success of the lesson. All of our hives (three) are currently in use and are very busy and productive. The hive only has to have the brood box and one other and all the components to demonstrate the working of a hive. All other tools and gear we have to show the children but the hive is the vital point of the lesson for the childfren to understand how a hive works. We would like to apply for this grant to fund a hive. The subject has been on this years school curriculum and is going to be for the fore seeable. The future of beekeeping is vital and we would very much like to be involved in the education of children. To educate children about how to keep safe and not to be frightened is the first step and to demonstrate to the children how this is achieved can be done in a very simple way. We show them how to keep safe and to try on a bee suit. To follow on to a look at the hive and how it works is to further help children understanding how the bees live and work to our benefit.
