Outside of the Thatcham Town Council Offices, there is a parcel of land that was underutilised. In 2022, a plan was made to transform the land into a Sensory memory garden which everyone in the community could use and enjoy.

The garden is now well-established with an array and abundance of colours, sights, sounds and produce! Sustainable, organic and pesticide-free gardening methods are employed to ensure the health of the soil and impact on the environment. We have also recently added some additional planters through a donation made by local residents.

The garden is made possible by a paid gardener and a team of local volunteers who have since forged an incredible bond. The space is a verdant area where young and old can gather and enjoy, equally it is where one can while away a pleasant afternoon enjoying the tranquillity that the area provides. We must also mention the many visitors of the insect, bird and small mammal varieties, that thrive in the garden.
Visitors are also free to take what they need from the garden, be it herbs, fruits or vegetables. This demonstrates a local circular food economy and although limited in year-round viability, can reduce food poverty among low-income households.

The garden also hosts many events, we've had numerous Dementia Action Week parties take place here, along with coffee mornings, Mayoral fundraisers and Council staff social events. We hope to continue the success of the garden over time as it is a valuable asset to the town of Thatcham.
