Steepfields Allotments and Leisure Gardens was established several generations ago to provide the surrounding mill workers back2back houses with gardens and space to grow. It sits, as the title suggests, on one of the valley's steepest hills. In the 1990s, it achieved national notoriety as local residents won a hard fought battle with local developers to preserve the hillside and have it designated as a village green.
