At Cardiff and the Vale Recovery and Wellbeing College we provide free courses on a range of mental health and wellbeing topics for those with lived experience of mental health challenges, service users, carers and staff.

Over the past 12 months, we have been developing nature-based courses to compliment the traditional curriculum of courses based around group discussion and shared learning. We have successfully facilitated a Connection through Nature course for people staying at in-patient rehabilitation wards. For people living in the community, we have a 4-week course based in nature which uses a range of arts-based learning in nature.

Park Lodge gardens will provide us with a permanent base for nature-based courses and allow us to expand the number of courses from 2 to 7 initially and to offer them more regularly. In addition to gardening-based courses on site we will also use the space to facilitate arts-based interventions and nature walks in the local area.

Our courses are facilitated by a person with lived experience of mental health challenges alongside a practitioner who brings learnt experience and knowledge from their areas of expertise. We will look to partner with health professionals and third parties including the RSPB, Grow Cardiff and other third sector organisations we have links with.

The gardens will provide a space from which we can facilitate psychoeducational courses, using nature to benefit people living with mental health challenges. The aspiration is to empower people to take charge of their recovery and live a life meaningful to them. This may involve returning to work, whether that is paid or voluntary. We hope that it will reduce the number of future admissions to inpatient services. This will benefit the wider community socioeconomically, and the health and wellbeing of people attending directly.
