Community
Vision
We provide opportunities in the Rye area to cultivate a well-fed and W.I.S.E. community.
Mission:
To promote wellbeing through inspiring, educating, and empowering our community in food production, wildlife preservation, and climate change resilience.
Gardening
At the Rye Community Garden, our main intention is to grow food which can be shared with Rye and the surrounding community; be it through the sharing of harvested produce between all community garden volunteers, donations to the food bank, and/or shared with the wider community during events. The idea behind it is to grow a garden which promotes food security and empowers people to grow their own food.
2025 feels a bit like a fresh start at the community garden, and we are working hard to increase our food growing capacity. We are doubling our growing spaces, including a completely new potato field and space for the creation of raised beds for people with mobility limitations, to enable everyone to engage in the growing activities. We are also exploring how to use more regenerative and sustainable growing methods such as no-dig cultivation, more drought and pest resilient growing like companion planting (supports pest control), and layer planting (increases shade at soil level), as well as crop rotation to maintain soil health.
Community
While the community garden clearly has a focus on producing food and creating a home for wildlife, it is also a place where new connections and friendships are made. This happens both at the Saturday morning gardening sessions, and the other events that are hosted in the garden space. The relationships started in the community garden have resulted in new members for other community and sustainability activities in Rye, such as the Sustainable Living Forum, Recycle Swap Shop, Green Drinks, Rye Men’s Group, and Community Compost Solutions – the garden really does work as a networking hub!
