We are enabling better access to local, sustainable food for people in Carmarthenshire.
About the project
As a stakeholder in strategic local food partnership Bwyd Sir Gar Food, we have co-designed a whole-food system project for Carmarthenshire. The project has been designed alongside grassroots network Rhwydwaith Bwyd Sir Gar/Carmarthenshire Food Network with input from residents, organisations, businesses and town/community councils.
The partnership is a member of the Sustainable Food Places programme and aims to nurture a resilient, diverse, sustainable, health-promoting and inclusive food system.
The partnership project will:
- Support growers to supply public sector meals, building on a previous pilot project
- Take on a county farm, growing food for a school menu redesign using local, sustainable ingredients
- Use the county farm to demonstrate what can be grown in Carmarthenshire
- Use the county farm as a hub for training, engagement, equipment and events
- Support more access to green public spaces for community growing, cooking and meal sharing
Link with the county's food insecurity projects to increase access to fresh produce
Grants
Small Grants for Food Activities for Groups with Protected Characteristics
Bwyd Sir Gâr Food is offering six grants of £2,000 to fund activities aimed at eliminating inequality, promoting equality, and fostering good relations between people. The grants are available to community organisations across Carmarthenshire, and this fund is aimed specifically to enable and amplify participation of members of groups with one or more Protected Characteristic.
Through innovative and engaging food related activities and events, funded activity will bring people together to facilitate ‘food conversations’, on how we can work together collectively for an inclusive, resilient, sustainable and fair food system locally and globally. The outcomes of these conversations will contribute to the development of a food charter for Carmarthenshire collated by Bwyd Sir Gâr Food.
This is a Welsh Government Ministry of Justice Local Food Partnership Development Fund, administered by Social Farms & Gardens on behalf of Bwyd Sir Gâr Food. Collaborative applications between organisations are welcomed.
