How to Run a Community Gardening Session for Volunteers

Join us in Kentish Town City Farm's beautiful garden, as Kayode and Susannah from Permablitz London guide us through their processes for bringing together groups of volunteers. 

This session will be exploring how to create a sense of community from practical gardening sessions involving volunteers. We will be discussing how we use permaculture ethics and principles to facilitate volunteer sessions and what impact that has on the experience of participants and the practical outcomes from the day. The session will look at the Permablitz London approach, which incorporates skills sharing and learning as a key part of a community gardening volunteer session.

Permablitz London is a mutual-support network which connects people with each other and the land through growing food. Permablitzes are free days open to all which teach permaculture design in action through implementing edible, wildlife-friendly garden designs. Once you have helped at several permablitzes, usually three, you can have one for your own private or community space. Since the network started 10 years ago there have been over 130 permablitzes involving over 1,000 people of all ages and cultures and established 8 outdoor community classroom gardens.
 

Outcomes:

• Designing a volunteer session to include more than a series of practical tasks

• Planning in learning outcomes to volunteer gardening sessions

• How to create a welcoming atmosphere where everyone can contribute

Cost: £20 per organisation*
