The garden will be an opportunity for local residents and interested parties to come together and use the space for leisure and relaxation. LCMG will share information in the local area about the greenspace to encourage local residents to become involved with the area. We also hope to work with local care homes and schools to create individual planting spaces within the garden.
Spaces will be designed to incorporate areas for sensory garden spaces, reflecting the history of Leith and its nautical links. Funding is hoped to be sourced for a project intending to preserve and revive the current large mural depicting the history of Leith and also encourage local artists to provide further murals to the left of the existing mural if it is projected that this cannot be restored.
Current hedging planted by CEC will be trimmed and the path within it cleared, creating a seating and planting space. CEC will continue to have an input to the garden through cutting the grassed areas and supporting LMCG through providing some plants and further help with guidance from our local greenspace officer.b
The sensory garden area will have specific planted spaces to encourage children to play in a ‘labyrinth’ created garden area again with seated spaces. We hope to work with Edinburgh Tool Library to provide seating here. Planting will be using particular species of plants to encourage pollinators and further wildlife into the garden space.
We will also work with local business owners (such as ‘Quirkys’ on North Junction Street) to create border planting areas (also established by CEC)..
In time we aim to possibly add an additional smaller tree species if it is found these will be beneficial to the garden and will not grow to a height that would be unsustainable to maintain.
LMCG also aim to work with other community gardens in our locality with a view to share tools, information and ideas that would benefit the greenspace.
