The aim of the Gateway Allotment Project is to offer new opportunities to people who may be isolated from their local community. The project is based on four allotment plots in Earlswood, Reigate, Surrey. Sessions begain in August and so far we have a shed, raised beds and are beginning to put together a communal area and a composting site.

The overriding theme of the project is empowerment. Clients coming along will be given the opportunity to take the lead in how the project develops. This will help to improve confidence and feelings of importance and ownership which are all key to enabling individuals to develop and progress into training, education or employment.

As well as coming along to get involved in activities we also want people to feel comfortable to do nothing during sessions. Just being present in a safe outdoor space can have a profound effect on an individual’s well-being.

The project by nature will incorporate Social and Therapeutic Horticulture which advocates the use of plants to improve physical, emotional and mental health benefits.
